Behind The Wine
Sabrina And Timothy Persson
In 2012, Sabrina and Tim took over their family’s 30-year-old winery with a vision to forge a path there for the next generation. But they also hoped to create a new winemaking venture that was just their own.
In doing so, the second-generation vintners faced more adversity in the wine business over the last decade than most do in a lifetime. Fittingly, the name Tim and Sabrina chose, Stalworth, signifies both the challenges they faced, and their determination, resilience and inner strength.
One of Napa’s most acclaimed winemakers, Celia Welch arrived in the Valley in the late 1980s and has been a trailblazer for women in wine. Her track record over the last three decades is impeccable.
She has made wines from every appellation within the valley, but it was in Rutherford where she cut her teeth. She has consistently made stunning wines that uniquely speak to their sense of place.
The near perfect season began with a mild spring with steady flowering conditions yielding a uniform crop. A moderate, extended summer gave the vines an even berry set and long ripening season. The fall sunshine and moderate heat created ideal conditions to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels. A stunning vintage for this long-anticipated wine.
The 2018 Stalworth Cabernet Sauvignon is true Rutherford, Napa Valley. Aromas of dark, ripe cherries, plums and black raspberries are complemented with hints of sweet anise, providing base notes and layers of complexity. On the palate, the texture is both broad and elegant with an immediate sense of fresh fruit. Dark red fruit flavors, hints of vanilla, toasty oak and very soft tannins help provide an effortless balance of weight and texture.
